what is gpacac?
Great Plains Association for College Admission Counseling, GPACAC (Juh-pack'-ack) n. [slang for the acronym]
1. an organization of professionals dedicated to serving students as they explore options and make choices about post-secondary education
2. a three-state/regional organization serving high school guidance counselors and college admission professionals in the states of Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma
3. a group dedicated to encouraging, advocating and facilitating equal access to post-secondary education and fostering communication among college-bound students, families and institutions
4. school professionals committed to maintaining high standards which foster ethical and social responsibility among those involved in the secondary school to college transition process.

our history
In 1966, Great Plains was formed with Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Texas formed its own affiliate (TACAC) in October of 1979. In the Spring of 1993, North Dakota and South Dakota formed their own affiliate. GPACAC is now comprised of members and member institutions in Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, as well as affiliate members who work with students in our tri-state region.
our missionGPACAC will support and advance the work of college counselors as they help students realize their full educational potential with particular emphasis on the transition from secondary schools to colleges and universities and with attention to access and equity for all students. In accordance with this mission, GPACAC works to advance the status of the association and its members in order to gain wider recognition of GPACAC's professional positions on behalf of all students and of practitioners who counsel students about their transition from schools to colleges.

To accomplish this mission, GPACAC: Advocates the rights of students in the college admission process; promotes and monitors the standards of professional behavior as set forth in the:
Statement of Principles of Good Practice;
Statement of Principles of Good Practice;
- encourages the increased participation of under-represented and under-served populations in post-secondary education and in the profession;
- furthers the professional development of all school and college admission counselors;
- represents the interests of the profession to students and their families, to allied professionals, to the media, to the government, and to the general public; and
- collaborates with the National Association for College Admission Counseling in achieving the goals of this mission statement.
