Her victory is historic — she becomes the first Black woman and the first woman in 20 years to lead Wyandotte County’s Unified Government.

A lifelong Wyandotte County resident, Watson was born at the University of Kansas Medical Center and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. Her roots in the community have shaped a career grounded in service, collaboration, and opportunity for all.

Watson’s professional journey spans corporate, nonprofit, and public sectors. She spent 17 years at Sprint Corporation, developing a strong foundation in operations and leadership. Her deep commitment to education led to her election to the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education (USD 500), where she served from 2011 to 2015, focusing on equity and student success.

She later served as Deputy Chief of Staff under former Mayor David Alvey, where she helped coordinate small business development, community engagement, and neighborhood revitalization efforts. Most recently, Watson served as Executive Director of the Kansas City, Kansas School Foundation for Excellence, strengthening partnerships between schools, businesses, and local organizations while expanding scholarship and fundraising programs to record levels.

Watson has also held several key statewide appointments, including serving on the Kansas Human Rights Commission, appointed by Governor Laura Kelly. She previously led the Heartland Black Chamber of Commerce, advancing entrepreneurship and economic inclusion for minority-owned businesses across the region.

Throughout her career, Watson has earned recognition for her ability to bridge sectors and bring people together to solve complex community challenges. Her leadership blends fiscal responsibility, compassion, and vision for sustainable growth.

A proud lifelong resident of Kansas City, Kansas, Christal remains deeply rooted in her faith community at Evangelistic Center - Hope International and is dedicated to her family, friends, and neighbors.
